L-Tryptophan is an essential amino acid that serves as a precursor for the sleep hormone melatonin, for niacin and serotonin.  Serotonin, an important neurotransmitter in the central nervous system, has a calming effect and plays a role in  anger, aggression, mood, sleep, sexuality and appetite.‡

L-Tryptophan is the least abundant amino acid in the American diet. Even people on high protein diets generally get less than 1.5 grams daily.  Supplementary L-Tryptophan provides nutritional support for restful sleep and positive mood.‡
